Grounded Child Development Society

Grounded Child Development Society is a Nova Scotia-based nonprofit dedicated to reconnecting children with the natural world and restoring child-led play to the heart of development. We believe that time outdoors — unstructured, imaginative, and free - is not a luxury but a fundamental part of healthy childhood. Our mission is to reach children across Nova Scotia and Canada, advocating for a shift in how communities, organizations, and leaders think about the environments and opportunities we create for kids.

Children today are given fewer and fewer opportunities to direct their own play, to take risks, to get muddy, to be bored, and to discover the world on their own terms. This reflects a broader cultural drift away from nature and toward convenience, control, and screens. We see it in classrooms equipped with devices before children have had the chance to climb a tree. We see it in playgrounds that are manicured, fenced, and sterile - designed with liability in mind rather than a child's imagination. We even see it in well-meaning developments that include wooden structures or painted murals of forests and call it nature-inspired — a telling sign of just how far removed we have become from understanding what real outdoor play looks, feels, and sounds like.

That disconnection is exactly what Grounded exists to address. When nature and a child's own curiosity are treated as afterthoughts rather than foundations, the spaces and programs we build for kids reflect that — and children are the ones who lose out. We work to change that, advocating for development at every level that puts nature and child-led opportunity back where they belong: at the centre.

Tideview After-School and Grounded Child Development Society

Nonprofit Initiatives

Tideview After-School operates within Grounded Child Development Society, bringing these values directly to children in our community through hands-on, nature-based after-school programming. Tideview is built on the belief that the hours after school are an opportunity - not to extend the structured school day, but to give children the freedom to lead, explore, create, and simply be kids in the outdoors.

Through Tideview, children have the space to engage in genuine, child-directed play in natural settings - the kind of raw, unscripted experience that is becoming increasingly rare, and increasingly necessary. Tideview is one part of a larger movement Grounded is building to show what it looks like when you put nature and children's autonomy at the centre of everything.
